Japanese Culture Club Presents: "GOEMON"

Come on down to the student lounge on
November 22 @ 11AM during common hour!!

It is loosely based on the story of Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary outlaw hero who stole valuables from the rich and gave them to the poor. The film is a fictional account of Goemon's exploits and his role during the final phase of Japanese civil war, especially the conflict leading to its decisive Battle of Sekigahara. With the use of over 2,500 visual effects, the director of Casshern mixes action with Japanese history and folklore into a film evocative of the classic Robin Hood-style tale.

As a child, Ishikawa Goemon's (Yōsuke Eguchi) entire family was assassinated for political reasons. His mother sent Goemon off moments before she was killed herself. Running away with his caretaker, they were attacked by bandits, but he was saved by Nobunaga Oda (Hashinosuké Nakamura) who offered him a chance to become stronger. Goemon followed Nobunaga and he was assigned to Hattori Hanzō (Susumu Terajima) to train him in the ways of the shinobi (ninja) along with Saizō (Takao Osawa).

Manga Recommendation of the Week - "Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa "

Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa
[Translation - "Harisugawa in the Mirror World"]
Author - Kano Yasuhiro
Genre: Shonen, Comedy, Ecchi, Romance, School Life, Fantasy

"Boys are creatures whose sight will follow the girl they like wherever she is. And if there it comes the chance that the boy realizes that the girl is in danger, if he is able to save her they will feel the ultimate bliss in life" is something that Harisugawa Tetsu has pointed out, and true enough he has always been following with his eyes the girl named Satomi Mao.

Thanks to certain details in their childhood, Satomi has always been friendly with Harisugawa and she has a friendly budding relationship, completely unaware of Tetsu's feelings for her. Tetsu for his part preferred to play the friend part and keeps his feelings hidden for the sake of not endangering the closeness that they already have, ever since he was young Tetsu had believed that if he can build little by little a good relationship with Mao, he will get to the point where he can confidently confess to Mao and not get rejected, Tetsu has always been waiting for his one true chance without getting too close to Mao by accident.

At first it seems that this "stalemate" will never be broken; however, one day Mao sees a strange mirror in an thrift store and for some reason she feels that she must have that mirror. Mao buys the mirror without thinking twice about it.... But she is completely unaware that the mirror will change forever Tetsu's life as well as her own.

Manga Hermit: Music & Those Who Live In It

Here is an online article by our club secretary... please enjoy!

Music is a powerful thing, ne? Whether you’re head banging to the latest heavy metal sound, mosh-pitting with the newest grunge rock, belting out the blues at karaoke amateur hour or singing in the shower to the newest Justin Bieber song, one cannot deny that music is an inherent part of our lives. Hell, during the writing of this article I had my YouTube favorite’s list on repeat. Music is like water – we all need it, but some just throw themselves into it. Musicians, singers, conductors, DJ’s – all those people are the ones who “throw themselves into the water” as I’ve so eloquently phrased it. Which brings us to this issue's subject: Nodame Cantabile!

Hope everyone had a great first week of school. We have plenty of events planed out for this semester lined up. I'm talking:
  1. Video Games
  2. Art Exhibit
  3. Movie Nights
The NYAF is next month (exactly 30 days from now....) from October 13-16th (mark your calendars).
If you wanna go for the 3 day weekend, its $65 for Friday through Saturday.

I will be purchasing passes from a local anime store instead of buying at the door during the festival (because the door has a line long enough to stretch around Jacob Javits Center everyday that weekend.)
